Become a Volunteer

Background:

HARDA is currently administered and managed entirely by a volunteer workforce. If you are interested in joining our volunteer workforce please drop us an email at harda@harda.org.au.

Currently we urgently need a volunteer to teach basic computer skills one or two mornings a week at our office in Flemington. We are also in need of tutors to teach English to Horn of African Men in Flemington, and our proposed new project in Blacktown, during school hours on weekdays.

Computer skills teacher

This role involves teaching basic computer skills to Horn of Africa men from a refugee background as part of our Horn of Africa Men’s Education Project.

The volunteer will teach refugee men how to use a computer, the internet and the basics of standard computer packages such as Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc. It is preferable for the volunteer to have some experience in teaching/adult education and obviously excellent computer skills are a pre-requisite, with qualifications or a working background in this area highly regarded. Good written and spoken English is required.

The classes run on Mondays and Fridays between 10:30am – 12:30pm, though the Friday may be able to be swapped to Tuesday. This role can be split between 2 volunteers, if necessary.

If you are interested in volunteering for this fulfilling and rewarding role please contact HARDA from Mon – Weds on 8762 4223 and ask for Rebecca or Fiona or alternatively drop us an email anytime at harda@harda.org.au.

Volunteers with experience and expertise are also wanted for the following positions (see details below):

  • Development Officer & Fund Raising
  • Website Design and Maintenance
  • Graphic Design

Development Officer & Fund raising

This position could involve as few as five hours per week in the first instance but it is envisaged that it may eventually involve up to fifteen hours which could be provided on a ‘job shared’ basis. In addition to providing services directly to HARDA the volunteer may be asked to assist participating member organisations from time to time.

Volunteers should be aware that because of its limited financial resources at this stage of its development HARDA is restricted to fund raising strategies which involve little or no outlay ‘up front’.

It will be important that the development officer works as part of the volunteer secretariat team, but once established s/he may elect to perform much of the work from her/his home office. Experience, a successful background in fund raising and a commitment to HARDA’s humanitarian mission are essential.

Website design & maintenance

Volunteers with professional expertise in website development and maintenance are needed to develop and maintain websites for HARDA Youth and Young People. Their organisations would benefit greatly from professional volunteer support.

Volunteers should indicate the amount of time that they can reasonably allocate to this work. They will be entered on HARDA’s Skills Register and requests from participating organisations will be processed through the Secretariat to ensure that they are consistent with volunteers’ notional time allocation.

Graphic design & layout

Volunteers with professional expertise in graphic design and layout are needed to design promotional materials, especially newsletters, flyers and brochures, for HARDA and its participating member organisations.

Volunteers should indicate the amount of time that they can reasonably allocate to this work. They will be entered on HARDA’s Skills Register and requests from participating organisations will be processed through the Secretariat to ensure that they are consistent with volunteers’ notional time allocation.
